Johnnie’s Hideaway – Living the Island Life

Located near the Disney area is Johnnie’s Hideaway. This is a restaurant that gives its guests the impression that they’re located near a tropical island. Being from up north, I felt this would be a great place for someone who is visiting Orlando and is looking for a beach ambiance.

Browsing over the menu, you’ll see many steak and seafood options. However, they really highlight their steaks and stone crabs. They note that their steaks are dry aged, on the bone, for 15 days following three weeks of wet aging. Sounds pretty delicious – right?

After looking over the menu and seeing what this restaurant had to offer, my friend and I thought we would order food that was not the typical norm. The reviews I’ve noticed in regards to this establishment really only highlight their steaks. Why not try something different?

For starters, we decided to order the steakhouse bacon and pan-fried frog legs. The bacon was very thick and had a smoky flavor. However, it had a tad bit too much fat for my liking. But come on – who doesn’t like bacon?

The pan-fried frog legs were yummy. I’m a huge fan of frog legs. If you’ve never tried frog legs the texture and taste is similar to a chicken wing. Although the meat is a bit more tender. We opted for the buffalo and Parmesan breaded frog legs and they were seasoned perfectly. The meat was nicely cooked.

For the main course, I tried one of their specials. I had the Chilean Sea Bass topped with a mango pineapple salsa. The sea bass was cooked so tenderly and had excellent flavor. I highly recommend. As a side, my friend and I split the lobster mac and cheese. In all honesty, it was ok. The cheese was a little too smoky for me and the lobster seemed to be overcooked. However, maybe I just caught this on a bad day?

Once my main course was finished, I had to have dessert.  When the server brought out a huge dessert table, I was super excited. They had a variety of desserts including chocolate cake, crème brulee and guava cheesecake. I had never tried guava cheesecake before so my friend and I opted for that item. Good thing we did. The guava cheesecake was so smooth and rich. You could certainly taste the sweet flavor of guava. The crust was also so good and was light and flaky.

So, if you’re visiting the Orlando area and are looking for a tropical hideaway I recommend Johnnie’s. It’s a fun and friendly atmosphere, and is a nice spot if you’re looking to venture outside of the Disney area during your visit.
