So, I have never been so excited about booking a flight home for the holidays. Its been two years since I’ve spent the holidays with my family in Ohio. I miss the snow, I miss the cold weather, I miss my family and I miss the local restaurants. One of my favorite restaurants by far is Tom + Chee (which was recently featured on Shark Tank and Man vs. Food). This shop is located in Cincinnati, Ohio, and also has a couple restaurants in Kentucky. I most recently visited the one in downtown.
Tom + Chee is a sandwich shop that puts a twist on the old-fashioned grilled cheese sandwich. There are more than 20 different sandwiches on the menu with a ton of variety. This includes meat, cheese and even donut grilled cheese sandwiches. The menu is right when you walk inside, and is written colorfully on a chalkboard. Since there are so many great choices, it’s very hard to choose the perfect sandwich.
After looking over the menu, I decided I would try the Armagoetta, as seen on Man vs. Food. As I took my first bite of the sourdough sandwich piled high with goetta, Cincinnati’s staple meat, I got a mouthful of delicious spices. This meat has a similar texture as fried bologna, but has a richer flavor. The hot mustard and red peppers definitely gave the sandwich an extra kick and gave my tongue a bit of a surprise. The onion straws, however, were the best part. I’m not much of an onion fan, but these were very good. If you like spicy foods — definitely order this sandwich. I guarantee your taste buds will be thanking you.
Oh, and for anyone who loves grilled cheese or anything cheesy, try the grilled Mac ‘n’ Chee on sourdough which includes: Mac & Cheese, Cheddar and White. This sandwich has a ton of cheesy flavors in each bite, and the sourdough and macaroni melts in your mouth simultaneously. My sister ordered this sandwich, but was generous enough to let me have a bite.
And, I’ve saved the best for last. The famous dessert — grilled cheese donuts. I ordered the Blueberry Blue (also featured on Man vs. Food), which has: blueberry compote, blue cheese, lemon mascarpone and a glazed donut. Absolute heaven on a plate. The blue cheese had such a strong flavor, but the sweetness of the blueberry compote and donut made everything better. I got a little taste of the lemon mascarpone, but the blueberry flavors were just so intense. Think of a Krispy Creme donut on steroids. Amazing.
When I head home for the holidays, this restaurant will be on my list of places to visit. You can never go wrong with a unique and delicious grilled cheese sandwich.
