Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille – New Smyrna Beach

Who doesn’t like taking a mini vacation? I certainly do. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to venture out to New Smyrna Beach to try Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille to sample their drinks and a few items off their menu.

When I first heard the name, I assumed I was going to an old-fashioned beach restaurant. I pictured a place playing Jimmy Buffett, tourists in their Hawaiian shirts and my father ordering steak and seafood. Boy, was I wrong.

Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille is not only a restaurant, but a marina where people can rent a boat, fish and enjoy a nice drink. However, what makes this establishment really stand out is the twist they put on the traditional beach town dining.

Looking over the menu, one will see many drink options and plenty of food.

Outriggers can make a mean drink. After looking over the menu I was recommended The Zombie, Bloody Mary, Trader Vic’s Mai Tai and the Mojito.

I opted for the Mojito because it’s one of my favorite drinks. This drink included – 10 Cane Rum, fresh mint and lime. This was one of the best mojitos I’ve had in awhile and I felt that the mint flavor was so fresh. Turns out, most of their mint leaves are grown on property. My boyfriend tried the Trader Vic’s Mai Tai – this drink calls for the original Trader Vic’s recipe which includes aged barrel rum.  The drink was refreshing and delightful on my palate.

To begin the meal, we tried the Fried Green Tomato Stack and The Sprouts with Candied Bacon. I also had the opportunity to sample a little bit of Diana’s Fish Dip, which came highly recommended. The dip was very delicious and I may have to order this when I make my way back.

The fried green tomatoes were excellent. Coated in Panko, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with goat cheese, I could not get enough. I personally would like to have tasted less balsamic and a tad bit more goat cheese, but overall I enjoyed this.

The next appetizer that we sampled was the Sprouts with Candied Bacon. This dish was made up of lightly fried Brussels sprouts, candied bacon and topped with balsamic vinegar. I really enjoyed this treat and would order this again. The sprouts had a nice crunch. If you like a bit of spice, the candied bacon certainly will satisfy this need.

After sampling a few appetizers, it came time for the main course. My boyfriend and I had the opportunity to try some of their best sellers.

First we tried the fish and pulled pork tacos on soft flour tortillas. The fish was nicely blackened with a cool avocado sauce and Cole slaw.  The pulled pork tacos also had Cole slaw but had a different sauce. I felt it tasted like a chipotle sauce.

Ever since moving to Florida, I’ve been a big fan of Chicken N Waffles. When I saw a Fish N Waffle option I had to try it. The Golden Tile Fish was very light and battered to a golden brown. What made this even better is that they purchase these fish fresh. It paired very well with the waffle. I enjoyed the fish so much I did not want to pour the syrup that was included on the side over this fine tasting entrée.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to know what a grit cake tasted like. I’m not a huge grit fan because of the texture (and it was not something I grew up with being from Ohio), but wanted to try this. The grit cake had a hash brown like texture but was SO good. The cheese over top of this did the trick. Sampling this was the best idea of the night, and I would like to eventually come back and try the Fish N Grits.

To wrap up the meal, we sampled the Key Lime Pie. I know this is a Florida staple, but I had never tried Key Lime Pie before. Well, just to let you know – I’m now a fan because of Outriggers. This pie was sweet and the flavor of lime just burst in my mouth. This sweet treat was a great finisher to a great meal.

Not only did I enjoy the food at this restaurant, but also the service and atmosphere were excellent. Everyone was helping one another and you could tell guests were having a great time. When I visit a new place, I take into account the whole environment.

If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy a meal whether you’re a local or visiting New Smyrna, I recommend Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille. I’m sure I will be back soon to enjoy a day on the beach and an enjoyable meal.
